The following is a letter written by John T. Spradling,
Jr. sent to the president of the 3M Company, Mr. L. D. DeSimone,
after the fatal bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City
in 1995:
Dear Mr. DeSimone:
I am writing to let you know that the 3M sun protecting film installed
on our windows is a much better product than I ever expected it
to be. On April 19, 1995 at 9:02 a.m., 4,800 pounds of explosives
were detonated in Oklahoma City. our building is approximately six
blocks away from the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. The windows
in our building are seven feet wide and 12 feet tall. When the bomb
went off, one untinted window over the entry door was shattered
by the pressure and blown into the reception room. One tinted window
in my office withstood the initial pressure but was blown out by
the resulting vacuum. I feel certain that had I not had the 3M film
on the windows we would have lost more windows to the blast and
that the window in my office would have been blown into the building
instead of being sucked out onto the patio. I was in my office directly
across the room from the only tinted window we lost and I feel that
the only reason I was not severely injured by the blast was the
protection provided by the 3M film.
The window has been replaced and new film reapplied. If there was
ever proof that your product is truly exceptional, this is it. It
also performs flawlessly at keeping our offices cool by reflecting
the heat of the sun. Our air conditioning bills are significantly
reduced as a result of having applied the 3M film.
You may use this letter as a testimonial to the high quality of
your product. Thanks.
Sincerely,
John T. Spradling, Jr.
